Municipality of the region of the Plana Baja, in the province of Castellón. It occupies an area of 8.44 km2 and is 27 km from Castellón. Ribesalbes, which was once a hamlet of Onda, is the municipality with the largest population of all those that make up the Community with 1,210 inhabitants.
HISTORY
Ceramics, first handcrafted and artistic and now industrial, has always been the main economic activity of Ribesalbes. The proximity to the two ceramic spotlights of the province, Onda and Alcora, has marked the artistic and ceramic footprint of Ribesalbes since Josep Ferrer founded the first earthenware factory in 1781.
This ribereña locality contributes water for the mills and tahonas of varnishes to obtain mud and is surrounded by mountains of which the appreciated clay is obtained, indispensable for the ceramics. The life of this municipality is also linked to the Mijares and the Sitjar reservoir, which regulates the waters in this low stretch of the river. In this area of the municipality the places of interest are abundant.
MONUMENTS OF INTEREST
A must see is the museum, installed in the Casa de la Baronía. This stately building with three floors and covered with Arabic tile, hosts an important sample of ceramic pieces, as well as one of the most impressive collections of fossils found in one of the lower Miocene sites throughout Europe.
We can not forget the church of San Cristóbal, of neoclassical style, the aqueduct with only one eye and the chapel of Calvary, from where a panoramic view of the town is contemplated.
NATURAL ENCHANTMENTS
In Miramar Miramar we can see the riverbed of Mijares River and contemplate the panoramic views and from there we enter the wooded area of recreation that surrounds the Sichar reservoir. In addition, the traveler can visit the departure of Calicanto and enjoy its waters in summer.
In the upper part of the town we find the source of the three jets and in the mountains the Baita fountain. In the zone of Rinconá, formerly there was a lake in which the first fossil remains have been found, dating from the Miocene Age. The remains that appeared were frog and lizards and also a large amount of insects and flora.
HOLIDAYS AND TRADITIONS
In the month of January, San Antonio is celebrated with a procession of cavalries and the traditional blessed roll is distributed among the crowd of attendees. In July San Cristóbal, patron saint of Ribesalbes, and in October the Christ of Calvary, Virgen del Rosario and Santísimo Sacramento with a great variety of religious, playful and bullfighting events.
