Get to know the Mancomunidad Espadán-Mijares through its history

If we can assure you of one thing, it’s that the Mancomunidad Espadán-Mijares will surprise you from many fronts. Coming to visit us is synonymous with disconnecting in the open air, exploring authentic landscapes and even releasing adrenaline with our wide variety of active tourism activities. But, in addition, we recommend you explore the routes that our region offers following our monuments and our heritage. An option that, without a doubt, will allow you to better understand our origins and get to the most curious secrets of our history.

We will start the tour talking about Aín, a municipality belonging to the Mancomunidad, whose origin dates back to the founding of a Muslim community prior to the 12th century. The general view of this small town with its white houses and its caches stars is capable of transferring us directly to the Moorish period. It is essential to visit its Castle of Benialí or the hermitage of Calvario, both located on the outskirts of town.

Argelita also has strong Arab roots, especially considering that in the 13th century it belonged to Abu Zeyd, the last Almohad governor of Valencia. Both its church, dedicated to Santa Ana, where the relic of the Holy Cross is located, and the Square Tower, considered the center of Abu's palace Zeyd, are two key points of our heritage. On your way through here, we recommend that you go to the Castillo de la Mola del “Bou Negre”, an equally remarkable Arab fortification.

Following this historical route we make another stop at the Castillo de Espadilla dating from the 12th century and located next to the Saganta rock, which still preserves a large number of remains and whose location, designed for the defense of the territory, allows us today to enjoy wonderful views.

Another castle that deserves our attention is the Castle of Toga, located in the municipality of Toga  since one of its main charms is that it is located next to the riverbed Mijares. Like the Hermitage of San Juan and Santa Bárbara that are in ruins but that keep the remains of a Medieval Site from the 14th century nearby.

In short, the options are endless and each one has its own special charm, making your stay in Mancomunidad always unrepeatable and that you manage to discover new corners every time you visit us.
